Montezemolo rises along the border between the Cuneo area and the province of Savona, in Liguria. The village is located at the point where the valleys of three tributaries of the Tanaro meet: the Cevetta, the Belbo and the Bormida. Part of the municipal territory falls within the Riserva Naturale delle Sorgenti del Belbo, a small undulating plateau between the towns of Montezemolo, Camerana and Saliceto. The Belbo River originates in these wooded hills, winding for a few kilometres through wetlands, where botany enthusiasts can admire important flowers.

The reserve boasts 22 species of orchids, each with a specific characteristic and a particular shape. The area is perfect for mid-season walks, while in winter it is possible to practice cross-country skiing. A dense network of streets and paths offers many opportunities for mountain biking and horseback riding. Visitors can rely on the new Centro Visita, and take advantage of several equipped areas to practise outdoor activities. The reserve’s geographical location makes it an excellent stop for the tourist circuits of Langa and Valle Tanaro.

The origins of the village are very ancient, some scholars having traced them back to the period of the Roman domination. In the very first official document, dated 1142, the origin of the name Mons Geminus can be traced back to the two twin hills overlooking the town. Conquered by the House of Savoy, in the eighteenth century the place became a fief of the Cordero di Mondovì Marquises, taking the name of Montezemolo. Today, the same family owns the fortified castle of the Villa hamlet.

The economy of the city thrives mainly on agriculture and livestock farming. Honey is a typical product of Montezemolo, and in fact the Municipality is one of the founding members of the Italian National Association Le città del Miele.
