SELLA MORTEIS

VALLE PESIO

10,5 km

Sella Morteis is a natural balcony on the eastern side of Mount Besimauda along the customary ascent route from Pradeboni. There is a small astronomical observatory nearby, with admirable views of a vast portion of the Ligurian Alps, from Monte Pigna to Bric Costa Rossa, with a panorama extending as far as the impressive north face of Punta Marguareis. This itinerary is very popular and largely free of risks. It is ideal for a quick trip since the starting point can be reached in less than half an hour by car from Cuneo.

Take the asphalt road heading south that winds through the woods, passing by the villages of I Gori and Tetti Marro (1,008 m). Continue upwards, flank from above a large clearing dotted with small, scattered huts as far as Le Meschie (1,076 m), an equipped area which is very popular in summer.

Avoid any detours and pass in front of the Meschie Hut, a splendid Alpine inn, and then continue on a long, straight section which turns to the left at the end. Cross the Rio Grosso stream over a concrete bridge and ignore a steep short-cut on the right. Take the easy-going forest track and its long hairpin bends penetrating into the mixed woods below Rocca della Losera.

At around 1,400 metres above sea level, the trees thin out before quickly reaching Sella Morteis (1,450 m). Leave the road to Gias Pravinè and continue to the right. Then turn left to reach the hill where a small astronomical observatory (1,468 m) was built in 2012 to take advantage of the low light pollution in the area.

The view embraces all the peaks surrounding the Pesio Valley, starting from Mount Pigna passing by way of Gardiola, Cars, Marguareis, Labiaia Mirauda, Mirauda as far as the Bric Costa Rossa and Besimauda peaks.
