VALDIERI, VALLE GESSO
CASA SAVOIA REFUGE
VALLE GESSO
10 km
The Casa Savoia refuge is part of the Terme di Valdieri spa complex, not far from the nineteenth-century Royal Hotel, in the heart of the Maritime Alps Park. The history of the spa goes back to the XVI century, but it was in 1857 that King Vittorio Emanuele II, who loved the Gesso Valley, laid the foundation stone of the majestic building that, at the height of its splendour, could accommodate 600 people. The refuge occupies a renovated chalet heated with thermal water and is easily reached about 5 km further on. When conditions permit, it is even open in winter at weekends and during holidays.

When following this itinerary, do not underestimate the risk of avalanches that may start from the large gullies descending from Mount Matto. It is essential to read the bulletins and ask refuge managers - who are very active on social media networks - for updated information about conditions.

Proceed from Tetti Gaina (Valdieri) along the snow-covered asphalt road towards Terme di Valdieri. The generally well-trodden route is about 5 km long on the orographic left of the Gesso della Valletta gorge beneath the rocky slopes of Mount Matto.
After a couple of hundred metres, leave the Vagliotta bridge on the left which allows access to the valley of the same name as well as Dragonet Valley. Pass by the small houses of Tetti Niot and then Tetti Lup slightly higher upstream. Stay on the snow-covered road, pass by a suspended bridge on the left crossing the Gesso della Valletta stream.
After taking two short hairpin bends, follow the last long traverse leading to Terme di Valdieri. Along this stretch, keep your eyes sharp to catch a glimpse of the distant Guiglia bivouac on the snow high up on the left of Rocca di San Giovanni.
Cross the bridge over the Gesso della Valletta stream and enter the spa enclosure. Then continue beyond the nineteenth-century Royal Hotel to reach the welcoming Casa Savoia Refuge (1,368 m).
Return along the outward route.
