MONTE CROCETTE

VALLE GRANA

6 km

Mount Crocette, also known as “Crosetta”, is a relief located on the south-east ridge of Mount Tibert. It is very popular in all seasons thanks to relatively easy access, splendid views and the nearby Sanctuary of San Magno. It is ideal for snowshoe treks, provided the snow is compact and bearing in mind that the last stretch involves a very steep slope.

From the Sanctuary of San Magno, follow the asphalt road towards Fauniera Hill. Two hundred metres after the Maraman Refuge, take the snow-covered asphalt road branching off to the right.

After passing a delightful stone hut, take the slope above the Sanctuary of San Magno, where excellent views open out. Turn left after four hundred metres and at a bend a little further on continue to the right. There is a plaque at one hairpin bend commemorating the terrible tragedy of 11 August 2020 when five youngsters who, having gone up to the mountains to watch the shooting stars, lost their lives when their car crashed down into the escarpment below.

Three hundred metres further on, follow the dirt road towards Alpe Chastlar and then take the steeply ascending track on the left that. A number of poles stand out above the snow to indicate the direction to follow, since it may not be obvious in the absence of tracks.

Higher up the gradient flattens out on reaching a kind of basin. Further on, it rises again even more steeply. Follow the summer path as far as possible and take the steep slope in a wide semicircle. The slope on this side is rather steep, so this section should only be followed if the snow is very compact.

A side track leads to the Crocette Pass (2,184 m), a crossroads of paths named after the many small crosses located in the vicinity.

Proceeding to the right (eastwards) along the short, somewhat uphill ridge leads to the peak of Mount Crocette (2,192 m), where a stone memorial stands over a small cross. The panorama is superb when the sky is clear: the view takes in all the peaks surrounding the Grana Valley, including Monte Bram, Punta dell'Omo, Cima Viribianc, Rocca Parvo and Mount Tibert. Looking northwards, Monviso inevitably appears and in the distance, to the south, the entire circle of the Ligurian and Maritime Alps.
